Segmentation of Organs and Structures in Female Pelvic Cavity

Pelvic floor disorders are high prevalent diseases affecting large number of populations, especially among aged women. Medical images of the pelvic cavity acquired by different imaging modalities provide critical resources for clinical diagnosis. However, neither 2D images nor 3D volumes give intuitive information on organs and structures contained in pelvic cavity. Meanwhile, complex backgrounds in the acquired images impose challenges to segmentation and reconstruction processes. We will discuss segmentation algorithms based on the characteristics of each targeted object. Algorithms for the pelvic floor muscles will be mainly focused. Effectiveness of the algorithms will be demonstrated through case studies with comparisons to the results obtained by the manual pipeline of visual analysis. Discussions on merits and drawbacks of the algorithms will be presented, and the main difficulties and perspective techniques on segmentation and reconstruction will be enumerated.
